February Update (Updated Version!)

Dear Captains

I would like to begin by welcoming several new members who were either Club Captains in 2020, or will be Club Captains in 2021. We are delighted to have you on board and look forward to meeting up in person in the near future.

Strange as it may seem, at this time of year, we would normally be celebrating another year of golf at the Somerset Golf Captains Annual Dinner. Sadly, the decision to cancel has proved to have been correct, and the Annual Dinner inevitably fell casualty to COVID-19 in exactly the same way as our entire program of inter-county matches, and our internal events, during the pandemic summer of 2020.

The most important thing however is to extend our best wishes to everyone and encourage all Somerset Golf Captains to follow the guidelines, stay safe, and look forward with enthusiasm to playing golf together at some stage during 2021.

At this time of year, we also open the online registration procedures for the year ahead. We all need something to look forward to, and so we will indeed open the on-line registration for the 2021 programme of Somerset Golf Captains internal events and matches  – from Monday, the 1st of February. Clearly, all of these events and fixtures will be kept under review – and some of them may indeed have to be postponed or cancelled depending on when the COVID restrictions are relaxed.

If you are new to the website, or need a reminder on how to use the on-line system, plea prefer to the following two documents:

The 2021 fixture list is almost complete. We have recently added the fixtures against Sussex (Home) and Somerset Ladies Past Captains Association (Away at Wells on 8th September. The only remaining fixture to be added later in the year will be the match against the SGU executive.

We are delighted to confirm that we will, this year, add a third internal event – the Captains’ Invitation Day” to be held at Oake Manor Golf Club on Tuesday 22nd June 2021. This is an exciting, new, internal event which we feel will be very popular. Each member of Somerset Golf Captains can invite a guest to join them in this pairs event. The guest could be a friend, a Captain from another club; a contact from one or the other Counties we play against – or anyone else. The first tee will be 11.00 a.m.  and the last tee will be 13:32 p.m. The day will include coffee & bacon roll; 18 holes of golf; 2 course meal, and prizes. The winning pair will be the inaugural winners of two new prize trophies donated by retiring President Mike Usher-Clark. All this for £35 per head – £70 per pair. So, when you register your interest, you will be booking two places!!

PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS A LIMIT OF 80 PLACES FOR THIS EVENT; IE 40 CAPTAINS AND TEHIR GUESTS – (FIRST COME FIRST SERVED)

The Somerset Golf Captains Executive Committee has decided that the AGM to be held in March will now be held via Zoom. The meeting will take place at 7pm on Tuesday 23rd March i.e. on the evening prior to the Spring meeting..The agenda and other papers will be published on the website prior to the event. To join the AGM via Zoom, you must first register your interest on the website, or email the secretary directly on secretary@somersetgolfcaptains.co.uk . This requirement will allow us to send you an invitation to the Zoom meeting prior to the event; i.e the Zoom meeting number and the password required to log in. If you have any particular questions or want to raise any issues, please contact the secretary at least one week before the event

The first golfing event of the year is due to be the Spring Meeting at Weston-Super-Mare Golf Club on Wednesday the 24th of March 2021. Realistically speaking, this date looks doubtful, and we will make a final decision after the government review of coronavirus restrictions on the 15th of February. But we do intend to go ahead if at all possible – even if that means just playing golf (in groups of four) but without food or catering.

You will also see that Saunton have already cancelled the traditional “Six Counties” event, played over both courses in April. However, the Devon President has arranged an alternative “Six Counties” event, for teams of 12, at Stover Golf Club on the 8th April, and this event is in the fixture list.

The current fixture list is available on the website using this link:

Fixtures for 2021 now published

From this link you can either download a fixture list to save and print at home, or follow the instructions to download an electronic version to import into your electronic diary.

Following the Government review of COVID restrictions on February 15th, we will email all members to confirm the decisions regarding the Spring meeting and the AGM.

Please get in touch if you need anymore information at this stage.

Best wishes and stay safe

John Beer
